Greetings & A Very Warm Welcome from each one of us at Bombay Round Table 2!

We are pleased to share with you that we had taken up two very profound projects for 2011.

To begin with we have joined hands with the National Association for the Blind, to aid them in their Integrated Education Project, which aims to provide quality education to the Visually Impaired in normal everyday schools. The cost per annum per student is Rs. 5,000/- and provides facilities such as text books, braille reading aids and material, uniform, footwear, private tuitions, medicines, play items, services of a special teacher and so on. We hope to sponsor a minimum of 100 students for the coming year.

Next, we will be expanding the ‘Tamarind Tree’ School in Sogve village near Dahanu. The school has 75 students studying in pre-primary at present. The trustees of the school propose to gradually impart education upto the 10th standard in the next few years. This is the only English medium school in the area. The teachers of the school have been given training by professionals in the education field. A lot of importance is being given to extra-curricular activities

We propose to build two classrooms, a common hall and two toilet blocks at an approximate cost of 14 lacs rupees.

The Tamarind Tree project will mark spends of more than Rs. 50 lakhs by BRT2 from the proceeds of the BMR alone, and that too just in 4 years time. Our projects have included :

• Braille Kits
• Computers for the Braille Printing Press
• Cots for the Visually Impaired
• MP3 players as part of the Audio Library Project for the NAB
• Braille Typewriters
• A Girls Hostel for the mentally deficient children at the MDC Home
• 118 Cataract Operations at Peoples Mobile Hospitals
• Flooring at the Dhabon Centre for Cultivation Talent.

The Round Table India Blind Man Car Rally is an Annual Event organised by Bombay Round Table 2. The 6th Edition will be taking place on the 5th of Feb 2012.

The rally is organized jointly along with National Association of Blind. IARC provides technical support in running the rally.

The Blind Man Car Rally is a rally where the “blind navigates and your drive”. The format of the rally is based on time-distance-speed parameters.

The following are some brief important points about the rally:

The BRT2 Team

RALLY IN BRIEF:
• The rally will take place on the 5th of Feb at Worli Seaface. A compulsory pairing session will be held on the 4th of Feb. Complete details are covered in the registration form.

• The car rally for the blind is a special rally where the driver is navigated or ‘shown’ the way by a visually impaired person.

• The navigator is given instructions that convey directions through various checkpoints through the rally route, which is approximately 50 kms.

• Another unique point is that this isn’t a ‘race’ in the traditional sense.

• This is a time-speed-distance rally.

• It is important to maintain speed as instructed by the navigator.

• If instructions are followed, the team will go through the checkpoints at correct times.

• There are penalties for reaching a checkpoint too late or even too early.

• This makes It a fun, unique and challenging event at the same time!

Participation Fees can be either of the following:
1. Rs. 1,200/- per car (One driver & a max of 2 passengers).
OR
2. Sponsor The NAB Talking Library Program (Rs. 5,000/-) and Drive Free! Progress reports will be provided thrice a year & the amount is 100% deductible under section 35 AC. Rs. 5,000/- is the actual cost and rally participation is provided complimentary in recognition of your good deed.

Through this Rally we support various initiatives of the National Association for the Blind, and other Education related projects. Over the last 4 years we have spent close to Rs. 50 lakhs on various projects through this program.

Girls Hostel at MDC Home, Mankhurd

Upgradation and provision of sufficient space for the girls of the Mentally Disabled Children Home at Mankhurd, Mumbai was a dream which began 12 years ago and was cherished by every member of BRT2. After a struggle of more than a decade and constant persuasion we finally received permission to create extra space for the ladies hostel.

MENTALLY DISABLED CHILDREN (MDC), Mankhurd is the largest home in the state of Maharsahtra for children who are mentally unfit and abandoned by their families. It is houses more than 400 children..

The ladies hostel was built almost 30 years back with a capacity of 85 girls, however it now has 190 girls and the numbers are ever increasing. There was extreme shortage of space and there was urgent need to upgrade the infrastructure. Also the basic necessities like drinking water and repair of drainage system was required.

The first phase of the project was built at a cost of Rs. 10 lacs and it consisted of the following:

• Built Dining Section (3000 sq ft)
• Built Court Yard shed (2500 sq ft)
• Repair of drainage system
• Drinking water fountains

The inauguration presented a very touching moment when we received a vote of thanks from Mentally Disabled Girls who could barely speak properly.

We are also in the process of building an extra wing to the hostel which is budgeted at Rs. 20 lacs as soon we receive the necessary permissions.

The SOSVA Tribal Children’s School at Dhabon (Near Dhanu)

The SOSVA Trust (Society for Service to Voluntary Agencies) school at Dhabon is located at a distance of 33 km from Dahanu Road Station, Maharashtra

This school is located in an area surrounded by several small villages and agriculture is the only means of livelihood. It is in a forest area with very poor roads and is quite inaccessible. The population is made up of uneducated farmers who are below poverty line and there is a large degree of alcoholism. Most people do not own land and they work as migrant labor and travel for over half the year, to all parts of the country. As children travel with their migrant parents, they are devoid of schooling.

The SOSVA Trust has thus set up a residential school having 300 residential students, including 80 girls. In addition to this they have 50 day students. The numbers are increasing every year as this is the only school in the surrounding area. It is a free residential school with separate residence for boys and girls. Presently it is running till the 6th Standard with 10 residential teachers. The school provides students with free clothing, 3 meals a day and vocational education.

There is extreme shortage of space as the original school was made for half the current number of students and it is at a point where they are unable to take further students due to non-availability of space. BRT2 has thus extended their support to the school and ensured to build a new building with classrooms and other necessary amenities. BRT2 has been working very closely with the Trust and Government agencies to get the necessary permissions. We hope to get the permissions in the next 4-5 months.

While we wait for permissions even the existing infrastructure was very weak and it was urgently required to renovate the same. The present 3000 sq feet of building did not have any tilling and the existing flooring was completely destroyed. The conditions were unhealthy and also unsafe for the children. We thus decided to take up tilling of the present 3000 sq feet of the structure immediately. The before and after pictures bear testimony for the work done and the comfort provided to these children

For the 4th edition of the rally, BRT2 leveraged several mediums for publicity. These were:
